Following World War I there were about 32 thankful villages. About 14 of these lost no servicemen in World War II either, and are known as 'doubly thankful'.
Wikipedia cites the newsletter of St. Cyrus, a village in Aberdeenshire, which refers to "blessed villages" – "none of [whose] men or women paid the supreme price in the defence of their country" in the First World War.
